THE IMPORTANCE OF RHYMES 2: "TWO LITTLE DICKY BIRDS"

Cardboard Theater: resource that can be used due to dramatization performings.

"TWO LITTLE DICKY BIRDS" ORIGINS
This nursery rhyme or poem is unusual as although the poem only has four lines there are two titles for it - the obvious 'Two little dicky birds' and the more obscure 'Fly away Peter, Fly away Paul'! An explanation for this could be the actions which accompany the words of Two little dicky birds! The imitation of a bird flying away is a very pronounced action and would there stay in the mind of a child - this action accompanies the words "Fly away Peter, fly away Paul". The origin for the term 'dicky bird' cannot be traced but term is passed down from
generation via 'baby talk'

LYRICS:

Two little dicky birds sitting on a wall,
One named Peter, one named Paul.
Fly away Peter, fly away Paul,
Come back Peter, come back Paul!

Teacher's resources:

By selecting the link below you will find a puppet making for fingers by MACMILLAN (two little dicky birds), we can use them in order to perform the two little dicky birds dramatization.

Rhyme and performance steps:
The rhyme is a very simple finger play & helps to teach children the following actions.

Two little dicky birds sat on a wall [use the index fingers on each hand to bend and flex like bobbing birds]
One named Peter [wiggle left hand finger], One named Paul [wiggle right hand finger],
Fly away Peter [put left hand behind back], Fly away Paul [put right hand behind back],
Come back Peter [bring back left hand / finger], Come back Paul [bring back left hand / finger].

Also, enact the rhyme by covering a small box with the brick rubbings / printing and stick two bird pictures on cardboard tubes and move them on and off the wall (you could use finger puppet birds if you have them).

DEVELOPED TASK:
We had a second attempt in order to develop the pupils’ oral, listening and performing skills in a funny and significant way as we tried to do with the previous rhyme "Teddy Bear".
